Getting a record deal, or even getting signed to a major label is not all that it's cracked up to be. Recording contracts can be short lived and cause you to loose most of the money and rights you own to your music.
What Is A Record Deal?
A record deal is not a way to get rich. A recording contract is basically a loan given to you to create a "project". With this project, you are required to pay for your marketing, your production,pr, and everything else that comes with being a career musician.
Getting An Advance
With a record label giving you an advance for your music promotion, it is money that you owe the label, which is mainly paid back through retail sale, merchandising and touring.

Getting signed to a record label is much more than just having a good song or music video. To get a record deal, the labels have to see that people are in demand for your music. You also need to be marketable with the image you have as an artist. To get a record deal you are going to need a nice sized budget to invest in your music. Without a budget, you are basically gambling for fame in a sea of millions of artists. The chance of you getting noticed and considered for a recording contract nowadays has nothing to do with your talent. That is a small part of this big equation. You need to have people that want "you". If you want to learn how to create connections with your audience, I suggest you get the book " the art of seduction, or 50 cent's book "50th law of power.
Read Your Agreements Carefully
A record label is not built to make the artist successful, but it is built on profiting from the artist. Most artist do not go over their contract and just get enticed by the money they get offered, but in the end, they will end up just over broke, and have no ownership over the music they create under a label.
Be An Independant Artist

If you only want the money and fame from the record label, and you dont have a work ethic, or a solid brand, you are chasing clouds. You should only consider getting into a record deal to get into other business. As an independant artist, you can make more money than you can with the label if you understand the digital and physical music business model. Being independant gives you more leverage on what you want to do as an artist.
